How Can You Do The Pregnancy Termination?

When does a woman need to take two MTP kits?

As said before, medical abortion performed through one kit typically aborts an early pregnancy up to gestation period of 8 weeks. This way, the contents are enough to stop the growth of the pregnancy and remove the embryo contents. However, when she is pregnant with more than 8 weeks (up to 10 weeks) one kit may not be enough for abortion. Hence, in such a case, physicians advise taking two MTP kits to end the unwanted pregnancy.

How does it work?

When you buy abortion pills, such as an MTP kit, it arrives with a combination of two medications which are required to terminate an early pregnancy. The first medication is Mifepristone (200mg), a drug containing anti-progesterone elements which stop the growth of the pregnancy. This medication is taken on the day you receive it. You may not feel any difference in the body but hormonal changes do take place during this time.

The second medicine, Misoprostol (200 mcg) involves prostaglandin elements. This medicine causes uterine contraction due to which the woman experiences heavy bleeding post consumption of the second tablet. She also experiences cramping which can last up to 1-2 days.

Side Effects:

Heavy bleeding and mild abdomen cramping are two expected side effects of a medical abortion which are faced by every woman undergoing the procedure. There are a few other side effects as well which are as follow:

• Diarrhea

All of the above side effects are temporary not needing special medical attention.

The Regimen:

As mentioned above, while you take the first medicine, you’re expected to consume it orally with water the day it arrives. The second medicine, Misoprostol can be taken buccally or vaginally. If you’re administering it buccally, you have to keep two medicines in each cheek pouches while in the case of vaginal consumption, two medicines can be inserted in each side of the vagina.

Once you have administered both the tablets, you will feel mild abdomen cramps and bleed in a few hours. If it does not take place within next 24 hours, you can repeat the dose as you did for the first MTP kit.

Post second medication consumption, the woman starts bleeding heavily and the body expels the fetus parts from trough blood clots. It lasts up to a week or more depending on your body type. You can have light food and hydrating drinks while you’re on the medication. Once the bleeding stops, you can confirm your medical abortion after 10 days. An ultrasound test or even a pregnancy test kit will help you determine the result.

Please note that if you start bleeding post consuming the first kit itself, you’re advised not to take the second medication for the avoidance of overdose.
